When
you sit on a single balloon, it usually bursts. How come all of the
balloons in your chair don’t do the same thing?
It
all has to do with distributing (or spreading out) your weight. When you
sit on a single balloon, it must support all of your weight on its
relatively small surface. The pressure of holding all of you causes the
balloon to flatten beyond the balloon’s ability to stretch…so the
balloon pops.
When
you sit on the bag full of balloons, your weight is shared by all of the
balloons. The pressure on each balloon is much less and so the balloons
stay intact.
If
you bounce a bit on your chair, you will feel the balloons change shape
in response to the added pressure. Bounce too much and…POP! |
