Balloon Discovery Fiesta--Junior Level

Make A Chair Out Of Balloons

Use the strength of air to support your weight in comfort. You will need a place to rest after blowing up all the balloons!

What You Need:

1 large drawstring-type garbage bag

A lot of round balloons (around 50)

What You Do:
Blow up and tie the end of each balloon into a knot.
Fill the trash bag with the inflated balloons. Jiggle the bag to make room for more balloons.
Tie the drawstring to hold in the balloons.
Try out your chair. Adjust the number of balloons until you find the point where the chair is most comfortable for you.
Why it Works:

When you sit on a single balloon, it usually bursts. How come all of the balloons in your chair don’t do the same thing?

It all has to do with distributing (or spreading out) your weight. When you sit on a single balloon, it must support all of your weight on its relatively small surface. The pressure of holding all of you causes the balloon to flatten beyond the balloon’s ability to stretch…so the balloon pops.

When you sit on the bag full of balloons, your weight is shared by all of the balloons. The pressure on each balloon is much less and so the balloons stay intact.

If you bounce a bit on your chair, you will feel the balloons change shape in response to the added pressure. Bounce too much and…POP!
