Kids Are Asking, Too.
by Christine Slusser

A Teen Asks:

I am 12 years old.  My mom and dad both work and don’t get home until late, like around 7:00 pm.  When they do get home they either have more work to do or don’t want to do anything.  I don’t have any brothers or sisters and sometimes I would like to play a game or read or do something with them.  Every time I ask them, they tell me “not now” or “maybe another time”, but that other time never comes.  Sometimes it seems like they don’t really care and they never have time for me.  How can I get them to do something fun with me?

Still Waiting for Fun in Wyoming

Christine is a 15 year-old high school sophomore.
She responds . . .

Well, first think of something you can say to start up a conversation with them.  Think of a plan and figure out your thoughts before you discuss it with them.  When you have figured everything out, go and tell them how you feel.  Tell them that you’re lonely and you’re hurting inside because it fells like they don’t care.  Tell them how you wish they would do stuff with you.

After that, try to talk to your parents about all of you having a family night.  Tell your parents that you just want to hang out and do something fun together.  Maybe the reason you and your parents don’t do anything together is because they don’t know what your interests are.  Tell your parents what you enjoy doing and discuss something you all will enjoy doing together.  I’m sure that if you tell your parents how much it means to you, they will make time for you all to be together.

So, tell your parents how you feel and maybe things will get better, but don’t think your parents don’t care because they do, they’re just busy.  I bet thing will turn out fine, just plan it out well and keep trying until you succeed.
