We teach our children to say please and thank you, but
whatever happened to the thank you card? When Grandma from Michigan sends
little Jenny a gift in Albuquerque, how does little Jenny say thank you?
Most families do not live in the same town. We are spread out all over the
country and keeping in contact becomes increasingly harder. I live in New
Mexico, while my parents live in Illinois, my grandparents live in
Indiana, and I have other family and friends who live all over the
country. A personal touch is always needed with such distance.
With graduation just around the corner, whether it is
kindergarten through college, your children will be receiving gifts and
rewards for their accomplishments. Lets try to send thank you cards to all
the friends and families who have recognized how hard your children have
worked. Instead of getting a box of the same old thank you cards from your
local store, why not have your children make individual cards? All you
need is some imagination, supplies and you’ll have thank you cards in no
time. I like to use paints, crayons, markers, colored pencils, some card
stock, and even plants from the garden. |
When creating thank you cards, it is not about how well
you draw. There is an artist in all of us. You do not have to be a
perfectionist or even know how to draw. Picasso drew people with two eyes
on one side of their head. When your children start creating their cards,
give them some ideas on where to start. They can draw the gift they
received, write a poem, or even glue a petals from a flower. It really
does not matter what they put on the front of the card, but that they
enjoyed making it. They are creating a special moment for their friends
and loved ones.
With small children, finger painting is always a hit.
What child doesn’t love to have their fingers dripping with paint? With
older children, they may prefer to use colored pencils, markers, or even
flowers. This will give them a chance to be more defined or abstract with
their creations. But then again, I still love to finger paint.
Nothing means more to a loved one than a hand made card.
They will treasure it forever. When Jenny sends her home made thank you
card to Grandma, Grandma will now have something to show off to all her
friends. And this does not have to be for graduations only. Your children
can make cards for holidays or their birthdays. This is just another way
you and your children can spend time together talking and having fun. |
