Cleaning the School
by Gregg Cappetto

For the second year in a row, CuriosityCafé’s employees participated in the "Great American Cleanup™ ". After Albuquerque's Mayor Baca kicked off the cleanup by reading a proclamation, everyone grabbed their bags and gloves and went off to cleanup the city. Since our company is based on children’s toys, games and gift, it seemed only fitting to clean up a school. We spent hours picking up garbage all around the school and wondered why the students were not helping as well. There were students and children walking around the school, some of them even littered while they watched us pick up trash. Why didn’t the school promote the "Great American Cleanup™ " day?

Our environment and the cleanliness of our cities seems to have fallen to the wayside. Some children do not understand the importance of keeping our cities or even their schools litter-free. There are trash cans all around schools, and still children throw their trash on the ground, sometimes right next to the trash can. As we picked up the trash, we saw what appeared to be students walking around. Were they not aware of "Great American Cleanup™ " day? What happened to the pride in our communities?

"Great American Cleanup™ " is associated with Keep America Beautiful, a national nonprofit public education organization dedicated since 1953 to empowering individuals to take greater responsibility for enhancing their local community environment. We should encourage our children and friends to take a part in cleaning up our neighborhood on a regular basis. We have all walked down the street and have seen trash collecting in the gutters or blowing around in the park. We just continue to pass by as if we never saw it. How can we expect our children to understand the responsibility we have to our community if we only pick up trash one day a year?

There are many things we can do to clean up our neighborhoods, our cities, and our country. We can recycle so there is not so much waste at our dumps. We can carry a bag with us when we take a walk and pick up trash as we see it. I can assure you that the bag will be full in no time. There are plenty of other things we can do to. Check out the Keep America Beautiful website at www.kab.org and see what you and your children can do to clean your communities. By doing this, maybe next year on "Great American Cleanup™ " day we will not ask ourselves, "Where are all the children?"
