Spring Fever? Take a Hike!

by Susan Sehi-Smith

Do you feel the pull of nature as the weather warms, days get longer, and winter's sterile white thaws into spring's lively green? Does it seem that your entire family has been trapped indoors--together--too long? Is patience growing thin? Is tolerance nonexistent between siblings?

It is time to gather your troops and GET OUT!!!!

Pick a beautiful sunny morning or a warm late afternoon when everyone can spare 45 minutes or an hour. Everyone should dress in comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. Ready?

Take a walk around your neighborhood. Rediscover what you've only seen through the car window these past winter months.

As you stroll, take the opportunity to discover, share and talk. Take note of the signs left by winter. Notice the changes already wrought by spring. Admire the greening of the scene. Discover the treasures slowly being uncovered in melting snow. Talk about plans for the coming warmer days. Chat with neighbors you might not have seen since leaf-raking season.

This is a time of year when most people take a critical look at their bodies and vow to make a more serious effort to exercise. A family walk provides physical activity, sets a healthy example, and promotes a shared commitment to true fitness. Be sure to pace your jaunt so everyone can comfortably participate; this is meant to be an enjoyable time together, not a race or a punishment.

A walk is a chance to demonstrate your family's concern about the environment. Take an empty bag along as you stroll. Use it to hold litter that your family picks up on your trip. Dispose of the bag properly, of course.

Walk for the predetermined length of time. When you return home, stretch the togetherness a little longer by sharing a snack of fresh fruit and water (to rehydrate). Talk about what you shared. Solicit ideas, suggestions, and comments from all the family members. Discuss other possible routes. Consider choosing a "walk captain" to navigate and to keep conversation moving. Make a family date to continue walking at least once a week. It doesn't cost any money; it is healthy interaction; and it is good for the soul.
